Nobody leaves looking like they arrived. Everything else about this place has changed at least twice.

The walk-up years.
Renata Silva opened Velvet Rouge in a two-chair walk-up above a laundromat on Bedford Avenue in 2011, having arrived from São Paulo eighteen months earlier with a lash kit and no clients at all. The first year was mostly friends, and friends of friends, and one very patient landlord.
The rule arrived in month three, after a client asked for something "natural, but not too natural" and left disappointed. From then on the studio only took work it could do loudly and well — and turned away everything it could not.
If you want it subtle, we will happily recommend somebody excellent three blocks away.
We moved into the current three-room space in 2018, kept the tin ceiling, and spent the entire fit-out budget on ventilation and lighting. Nothing else in the room matters if the light is wrong.

How we work
Six things that are non-negotiable, and have been since the walk-up.
No clusters, no strip glue, no shortcuts. If a set takes two and a half hours to do properly, it is booked for two and a half hours.
Shot on the same rig against the same wall, so your next visit starts exactly where the last one ended.
Nobody touches a paying client before then. Our apprentices work on the team, on mannequins, and on a great deal of patience.
Six air changes an hour and a source-capture arm at every nail station. You should not be able to smell a nail bar.
Written up, in full, including art. Nobody has ever been surprised at this desk and nobody ever will be.
To damaged nails, to infilling somebody else's bad set, and to anything that will not last four weeks. Every time.

The room itself.
Three rooms, nine stations, and a front desk that doubles as a coffee bar. The lash room is deliberately dim and deliberately quiet; the nail room is loud, plays whatever Jade wants, and is where most people end up staying after their appointment.
We are not a spa. There is no whale music, nobody will whisper at you, and the espresso machine is used constantly.
What that means for your appointment
Come as you are, bring whoever you like, and expect conversation unless you say otherwise — say otherwise and the room goes quiet without anyone taking it personally. Headphones are the universal signal here.
